Get to know us

The National Guardianship Liberty Movement (NGLM) was born from lived experience and a simple belief: no person should lose their freedom, dignity, family, or life's work simply because a system intended to protect, failed.

Founded by nationally recognized guardianship reform advocate, Julie Belshe, who years-long fight to free her parents from an abusive guardianship was documented in the acclaimed film The Guardians, NGLM has grown into a nationwide movement dedicated to protecting vulnerable adults, supporting families caught in guardianship and conservatorship battles, and exposing systemic failures that allow exploitation and abuse to continue.

We understand how isolating and overwhelming it can be to fight a system you once believed was there to protect you because many of us have lived that fight ourselves. NGLM brings survivors, families, advocates, professionals and reformers together so that no one has to face it alone. Through education, advocacy, resources, community, support and the pursuit of meaningful reform and accountability we work to protect individual rights, preserve families, amplify voices that have been silenced, and help create a guardianship system in which liberty, due process, dignity, and human rights come first.
